Make Your Handwriting a Font

Chris on February 13th, 2009

Are you always on the look out for new fonts?  Have you always wanted a font that looked just like your handwriting?  I must admit that I have.  I’ve seen services in the past that will make them for you, but they’ve always been a little more than I wanted to spend.  Sure it’d be fun, but I didn’t need to spent $5 on it.

Well I just stumbled upon YourFonts.com, and they will generate a font of your handwriting for you to download.  The best part is it’s free, they don’t even ask for an email address.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Download their template pdf.
  2. Fill it in with your writing
  3. Scan it and upload it on their site.
  4. Wait a few minutes and they generate the font and give you a download link.
  5. Install and use.

Here’s a sample of the one I created:

Looks just as sloppy as my real handwriting.  If you’ve always wanted that personal, handwritten touch, but were too lazy to actually write this is just what you need.

Kindle 2.0

Chris on February 9th, 2009

Amazon announced the revamped Kindle today.  They made a lot of changes to the hardware, and it looks like they are for the better.  It’s super thin and the buttons don’t look like they get in the way like they did on the original.

It doesn’t ship until the end of this month, and I sure wish I was on the list to get one.

There was a rumor that Amazon was going to start selling Kindle books for other mobile devices (like the iphone and ipod touch), but it didn’t come today.  Although it was hinted at, so maybe it will still happen.  I love the idea of reading books on my phone, I used to read books on my old iPaq and it was great.  One of the biggest draws to the Kindle for me is the variety and the pricing of the books.  They have by far the biggest selection and are way cheaper than other ebooks available from other sites.

Anyone else out there think a Kindle is in their future?

Moving Photos 3d

Jeremy on February 8th, 2009

movingphotos3d0741I’ve been debating as to whether or not to post this, but it’s so cool! As I was listening to Macbreak Weekly, one of the pundits recommended Moving Photos 3d. Since I had nothing better to do at the moment, I downloaded it. Now, I’m not one for snazzy screensavers (I usually have the default on every computer), but this thing is amazing. I ended up setting up hot corners so that I could activate it whenever I wanted! Once you show it where your iPhoto library is stored, it pulls them in and creates incredible 3d objects and flys around and through them. I have so many photos, that I end up never really looking through them. This is a great tool to help you enjoy the photos and memories they carry. Do yourself a favor… download it!

Bill Gates at TED

Chris on February 6th, 2009

I think the stuff that comes out of the TED conference is some of the best on the net.  If you’re not familiar with TED it’s a conference and the name stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design.  The talks are diverse and I almost always find them fascinating.  One of the best parts is they are almost all around 20 minutes, so you can get through one quickly.

This years TED conference is going on right now and here’s the talk Bill Gates gave.  The title is How I’m Trying to Change the World Now. It’s worth a watch:

If you liked it I recommend subscribing to their podcast (link opens iTunes).  Or if you’re an iPhone user they have an app too.

A few weeks ago I wrote about how GodTube was changing it’s name.   Today we found out what that name is: Tangle.com.

Here’s a video from their CEO explaining the new name and vision:

What do you think?  Will you use it?

Facebook Turns 5

Chris on February 4th, 2009

facebook-turns-5-years-old-a-look-at-facebook-through-the-years

Everyone’s favorite social network turns 5 years old today.  It’s come a long way the past few years, a lot of people never thought it could catch up to the mighty MySpace.  In order to celebrate FaceBook has added a special free gift in their gift shop to give to people.  I can’t believe that my son and FaceBook are the same age. Checkout this great post that shows facebook through the years: FaceBook turns 5.

For those that don’t think FaceBook is the powerhouse that it is here are a few stats:

  • 15 million users update their statuses at least once each day
  • 850 million photos are uploaded to the site each month
  • 24 million pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photos, etc.) are shared each month
  • 3.5 million users become fans of Pages each day
  • The average user has 120 Facebook friends

Those just blow me away. It’s an amazing tool for connecting people.  We recently had a tragedy strike our ministry and it was amazing to see people supporting and lifting each other up there.

How are you using it in your ministry?

Favorite Superbowl Commercial

Chris on February 1st, 2009

I had a hard time picking my favorite Superbowl commercial this year.  None of them were in the same class as Apple’s 1984 ad, but I think this is definitely in the running.  It made me laugh.

If you wanted to view them all Hulu.com has them posted.  It was a great game, but you know that people will still be talking about the commercials in the morning.  If you want to engage your students about these commercials check out this great download from Walt Mueller over at YouthMinistry.com, it a set of questions to help think about them critically.  Could be a great thing for Small Group this week.

GodTube is Changing It’s Name

Chris on January 21st, 2009

I don’t know how many of you out there are frequent GodTube visitors, but soon it will be changing it’s name.  They didn’t mention what the name is, but Mashable quipped it should be GodBook . It seems they want to be the Christian mashup of YouTube, Facebook, Myspace, and other social sites I suspect. I’m not sure when the big change is coming, but I’m sure we’ll hear more about it in the coming days.

At least they got the SkitGuys to make the announcement:
